For my 23rd birthday in 2006, my mother bought me a silk painting class as a gift. At the time, I was working in retail and making barely above minimum wage, and couldn’t afford the $75 the class cost. I treasured that gift, and came home with two beautiful silk scarves. Over the years, I kept swearing that I would go back, but have always managed to make excuses as to why I couldn’t afford to go.
I’m not sure what bit me in the ass, but when I saw the instructor’s newsletter announcing his classes for the Fall, but I knew I had to do it. I don’t get the opportunity to make art as much as I’d like, and these classes are a great excuse: for the entry fee, I get all of the supplies that I need and an entire, uninterrupted day to complete the project.
Despite the weird lake-effect snow and slick conditions, I was able to make it to the Holden Arboretum for class, and was able to make beautiful art in a beautiful setting. I am so glad that I got to go.
