Have you ever listened to Pop Culture Happy Hour from NPR?

You haven’t?  Well, hie thee to the download application of your listening device of choice and get yourself a nice steaming cup of PCHH.

At any rate, Glen had mentioned that he was not as avid a reader as he felt he should be, so he created an email that listeners could recommend books to him to read in an effort to jumpstart his reading.

I mention the above as a ham-fisted segue into saying that I don’t read nearly as much as I feel I should.  I seem to fall into the same cycle of getting way too many non-fiction books from the library, giving them a cursory flip-through, and then letting them sit until I’ve run out of renewals.  They return to the library in much the same state as they left: unread.

Turns out, after much soul-searching, I came to realize that I’m just not built to physically read non-fiction.  Well, certain types of non-fiction.  I plowed through More Than a Pink Cadillac and Put on Your Crown, but I cannot for the life of me get through Get-It-Done Guy’s 9 Steps to Work Less and Do More or Your Money Milestones both of these are books I really want to read, I just cannot get through them.

The thought occurred to me while The Boy and I were on our weekender that the way I can get through these books is by listening to audio books.  Forget the Kindle, bring me Audible!  I used audio books to get through all of Malcom Gladwell‘s books – and still feel as though I really absorbed the material.  I listen to a lot of podcasts, and feel like I retain that knowledge.

Along with getting a new car, which I’m hoping will be fitted with an audio jack for my Zune, I think I’ll spring for an Audible subscription.  Forget the satellite radio subscription (I don’t consider myself to be a huge music nerd, so I doubt I’d ever make it worth the price of admission), I’ll just stick with loads of audio books.

And for those curious about which book Glen chose to read? The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
