I’m currently sitting at home with a cold/flu, but I’ve been taking ZiCam like a champ; I’m hoping that after another 12 hours of being horizontal, I should be recovered. Being sick stinks; this is one of the few times that I get to see The Boy during the day, and I want to make the most of it. Being sick doesn’t really help.
So, in addition to some light blogging, I’m going to include a Christmas meme. Please, do enjoy.
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Mostly wrapping paper. I’ve gotten really good at wrapping gifts if they are square or rectangle (I know, I know, not hard), and I will try to buy a box if the object is shaped weird. But, if I am at a loss for time, or cannot find a box, I will gift-bag an item. I really think that people like to tear things apart when they get gifts, therefore, I wrap them.
2. Real or artificial tree?
Fake: they are super-easy (especially if pre-lit), and a cheaper alternative (if you have it for a few years), and a “greener” alternative (if you’re into that). Apparently, everyone in my immediate family is horrifically allergic to real trees, and I hate stepping on leftover Christmas needles in July.
3. When do you put up the tree?
I think that it was the weekend after Thanksgiving. But if you have a fake tree, I don’t think that it matters. To be fair, I hate having Christmas shit up so early, I get sick of it way too soon.
4. When do you take the tree down?
January 6, at least Catholic tradition dictates. But again, do you really want to be that hillbilly that gets to July and says, “To hell with it, we’ll just leave it up until Christmas”?
5. Do you like eggnog? Is it spiked?
I detest eggnog; I think it is the nectar of Satan. No offense to my dear friend who makes it homemade, it’s not personal against her eggnog. I just find something repugnant about eating raw eggs and meringue.
6. Favorite gift you received as a child?
I can’t even remember any of them. The only one I can remember is a bike, and the only reason why I remember it is because I saw it in a picture. How sad.
7. Do you have a nativity scene?
My mother has one that belonged to my grandmother that is by Lennox. I think that I’m inheriting it, but I think I’m just going to keep it out all year long. I don’t consider myself Catholic anymore for it to mean anything to me.
8. Hardest person to buy for?
My father. He owns everything he already wants, and doesn’t like anything anyone else picks up for him.
9. Easiest person to buy for?
My mother. Jewelry mostly works for her.
10. Worst Christmas gift ever received?
I got a sweater one year for Christmas with knit netting arms and sequins. It went straight into the Goodwill bag.
11. Christmas Cards…snail mail or e-mail?
Man, did I ever suck this year: I wrote all of my Christmas cards, and never sent them. So, if you’re looking in the (snail) mail, that’s where it was.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
A Christmas Story, but I can only watch it once a year. I’ve been to the house (it’s obviously near my home town), and The Boy has the lamp. It’s truly an awful movie, but I have to watch it because it’s from Cleveland.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
I did my shopping online mostly, and started at the end of October.
14. Have you ever ‘recycled’ a Christmas present?
Yes, and I have one that I’m planning on recycling this year.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
Prime rib. And, I’m getting ready for Crabstravaganza at the [in-law]’s this year.
16. Clear lights or colored on the tree?
Christ on a bike: clear! I’m very traditional and very compulsive about things like that. That said, when The Boy and I move in together and have our own tree, I will do two: one that is very traditional and Victorian, in silver, maroon, and gold with white lights; and one that is (pardon my colloquialism) polish and has bubble lights, colored lights, aluminum tinsel, and ugly ornaments.
17. Favorite Christmas Song?
Carol of the Bells as the traditional song,
Silent Night as my favorite church hymn, and
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas as my contemporary Christmas song.
18. Travel at Christmas or Stay Home?
Travel mostly to my in-laws’ house. But I really can’t wait to just stay at home and eat macaroni and cheese with The Boy.
19. Can you name Santa’s reindeer?
No. And I’m not going to try, because I will cheat and look it up. So, simply, no.
20. Do you have an angel or a star on top of your tree?
My parents have an angel, my in-laws have a spire, and The Boy has a star.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
I really loathe all the other people who are shopping this time of year. I’ve done my shopping, and have little sympathy for people who are “so stressed” because they are doing all of their shopping on the last possible day. I’m just in there to buy some ZiCam for Christ’s sake!
23. Shopping…mall or on-line?
Online: I detest crowds and lines.
24. Do you decorate outside for Christmas or just inside (or at all)?
It used to be all-out war in the neighborhood with Christmas lights, but since moving to Chesterland, there isn’t any competition. Now, decorating is on the inside mostly.
25. Favorite Christmas cookie?
My mother-in-law’s butter cookies. I can only eat about one in a sitting.
26. Do you own Christmasy clothing or jewelry?
If red, and sparkly counts, then yes on the clothing front. But nothing with a Christmas theme to them. And I wanted a snowflake diamond necklace, but I never got around to saving money for one, so that’s out for this year. But, then again, there’s always next year.
27. Do you believe in Santa?
Why wouldn’t I? Is there something I’m missing?
28. Favorite ornament?
Don’t have one.
